Tesla Diagnostic Cable Adapter – Model S and Model X Diagnostic data port
Both the Model S and Model X are equipped with a propitiatory diagnostic data connector. This connector gives users access to a lot of useful information about your Model S & X, such as battery capacity, battery voltage, drive-train output, HVAC data etc..
There are a few 3rd party apps that are available, that with the use of an OBD-II module, and a diagnostic cable, will read this data, and display it in human readable form.
Location of Diagnostic connector
The propitiatory diagnostic connector on the Model S and X can be found between the front screen and the cubby. To get access the connector you need to pull the front of the cubby in a downwards direction (not towards you). It is held in place with two metal clips near the front of the cubby. The cubby can be easily clipped back in-place.

- Pre Sept 2015 – For Tesla Model S manufactured before September 2015.
- Post Sept 2015 – For ALL Model X and Tesla Model S manufactured after September 2015
- Model 3 Coming Soon.
There are two versions of the connector depending on when your Model S/X was built. The Model X was built after September 2015, so will need the post sept-2105 cable, if your Model S was built before September 2015 you need the pre sept-2015 cable.
Application software And Hardware.
You will need to purchase an OBD-II adapter as well as the application software to decode and display the data off the diagnostic connector.
Application software currently available is ScanMyTesla (Android) and TMSpy For Andriod Or TMSpy For IOS. Either app will work with an ELM327 or STN11100 compatible OBD-II bluetooth adapter, with the above cable. Care must be taken when selecting the OBD-II adapter, as not all cheap adapters support the CAN bus protocol (even if they say they do), we would recommend an OBDLINK LX Bluetooth adapter, but any high quality adapter that supports the ST command set is recommended. Please refer to application software for further help with ODB-II adapter selection.
